One thing I kept wondering while reading this: if the goal is to avoid pathologizing AI relationships, does bringing the DSM into frame this early risk doing some of that work before the clinician has even established whether the relationship is causing distress or impairment?

I wonder if the order matters: first describe the relationship and its effects, then assess harm or dysfunction if present, and only then ask whether any clinical category is useful. Otherwise “has an AI companion” can start behaving like a symptom marker before we know whether it is one.
